The project is to design a Racially Diverse Ballet Library. This library serves as a center for highlighting the contributions of racially diverse individuals in the ballet world since the 19th century, aiming to reimagine the ballet community with this focus. The library provides a space to educate people about the history and culture behind racially diverse ballet. Located in New York, a significant area in the history of racially diverse ballet, the design emphasizes a human-centric approach.
The library features an abundance of spaces for socializing and wellness, including cozy seating areas along the theater and shelves beneath the seating where visitors can easily access books. Additionally, a cafe is provided where people can sit, relax, and recharge. The library, seating areas, shelves, and cafe are arranged in a large circle, creating a sense of connection and immersion within the space. The history of ballet has contributed to the perpetuation of skewed gender roles, traditionally favoring male dancers with more performance opportunities.
